If you want traffic, you have to buy it. If you want video views, you have to buy those, too.
How much does a video view cost? The quick answer is $0.001 – $0.02 per view.
For the past week I have been running a Video Ad campaign on Facebook, Instagram and YouTube.
In this article, you will discover how much it cost per view to promote a video (to the audience of your choice).
Targeting your audience
The difference between buying views from Google Adwords or Facebook and buying them from a service offering 1,000 views for $10 in 24 hours is the quality of the view.
On Google and FB/IG, you are able to target your video to a very specific audience based on Interests, Pages Liked, and a number of other factors which will guarantee you are reaching real people who have let Facebook or Google know they have an interest in the style of music you create.
However, paying for untargeted, cheap views opens your video to being viewed by bots, automated advertising services, and the views will show up in your YouTube Analytics as coming mostly from Eastern Europe or Russia.
The video for this campaign is a preview of J.Smo’s new single with Bob Crain titled “Forsaken Veteran of the Drug Wars”, a mix of Hip Hop and Australian Folk. The single will be available on February 26th but we are trying to raise awareness and generate interest with a preview clip.
Since Facebook and Google have so much data available to advertisers, we are able to target this video to a very specific audience. For this video, we will be targeting:
- 18-45 year old male and females,
- who have shown interest in Hip Hop or Indie Music,
- who live in the U.S., Canada, Australia, or UK,
- who are using Instagram, Facebook or YouTube.
*Note: After 7 days we changed our targeting to the United States only. Specifically on FB/IG, our video was being delivered to Canada significantly more than the other regions we specified.
Within our YouTube Video Ad campaign, we have more specific targeting options including:
- users watching videos on Channels promoting Indie Hip Hop.
- users who search for videos with keywords: “indie music” “hip hop music” “hip hop songs” “listen to music online” “free music online” “rap songs” “listen to free music” and others related to listening to Indie or Hip Hop music online.
- Users who have previously viewed a J.Smo of BUNKS video, subscribed to his channel, or viewed his channel. This is referred to as Remarketing.
Facebook and Instagram
Facebook owns Instagram so IG ads (aka Sponsored posts) will be created and maintained through the Facebook Ads Dashboard.
After 7 days, you can clearly see that the majority of our Reach (92%) and Views (91%) is coming from Instagram.
Cost per video view on Facebook
For this campaign, I turned off ads that show in the Right Column when viewing FB from a Desktop computer. This is why Desktop Right Column has no results.
With that said, after 7 days our video has appeared to our target audience on:
- Facebook’s Desktop News Feed 56 times for a total of 5 views costing $0.03 / view.
- Facebook’s Mobile News Feed 985 times for a total of 283 views costing $0.01 / view.
- Facebook’s Desktop Suggested Videos Feed 8 times for a total of 8 views costing $0.01 / view.
- Facebook’s Mobile Suggested Videos Feed 231 times for a total of 66 views costing $0.01 / view.
Cost per video view on Instagram
After 7 days, our video has reached 14,196 users accumulating a total of 3,352 video views costing $0.001 / view.
The post has received 31 Likes and a few comments. I have embedded the Sponsored Post below.
More FB/IG screenshots
Below are two more screenshots showing results from the FB/IG campaign.
Google Adwords / YouTube Ads
Our In-Stream ad on YouTube has been served 262 times resulting in 94 views costing an average of $0.02 per view.
The artwork for this single/video contains “adult imagery” which makes it ineligible for In-Display advertising across Google’s network.
On FB I have been spending $1.00/day to reach my audience but our YouTube campaign was set for a total budget of $5 which Google spanned across 14 days at $0.36/day.

Performance & Engagment
The power of Google and FB advertising to find and reach your audience is undeniable.
As indie musicians who do not have the luxury of label-backing or other financial support, Google and FB have given us access to two of the most powerful advertising engines currently available to digital marketers.
With the ability to target a very narrow and specific group of people, you are guaranteed to reach music fans who like your style and qualify as potential new fans.
Being able to guarantee video views to a specific audience for $0.001 to $0.02 per view is a game changer.
Traditionally you would have to buy billboards, time on MTV or VH1, radio ads, and ads in terrestrial media… The cost(s) associated with that has always been far fetched for your average, independent musician.
